Is escrow actually safer than just wiring the money to the seller?

If a direct bank transfer is instant and simple, why involve escrow at all and pay a fee for it? I get that escrow adds a middleman, but for a private car purchase, what's the real advantage?

The difference is reversibility. A direct transfer is gone the moment it lands, so you're relying entirely on the seller. Escrow holds the funds with a neutral agent and releases them only after the vehicle is delivered and your 10-day inspection period confirms it matches the listing. It buys you time and leverage.

Also consider title risk. A direct wire moves instantly, but a title problem can take weeks to surface. Escrow can be conditioned on a clean title.
